What is tested in the GAMSAT Exam

The GAMSAT exam is designed to assess not what you know, but how you think. It examines your ability to analyse, interpret, and problem solve across unfamiliar content.

Section 1 – Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences

62 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 100 minutes.

This section presents a range of written and visual texts- literary prose, opinion articles, poetry, diagrams, comics, and more- followed by multiple-choice questions. You’ll be tested on your ability to:

• Interpret meaning beyond the literal
• Identify tone, perspective, and authorial intent
• Make logical inferences and evaluate arguments

This section rewards critical reading, empathy, and analytical clarity under time pressure.

Section 2 – Written Communication

2 essays to be completed in 65 minutes.

You’ll be asked to write two essays in response to distinct thematic prompts:

• Task A: Typically explores social or political issues
• Task B: Focuses on personal or philosophical themes

Your essays must demonstrate:

• Original, relevant ideas
• Clear structure and logical progression
• Effective use of language, tone, and examples

This section assesses your ability to think deeply, write clearly, and respond under pressure.

Section 3 – Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences

75 questions in 150 minutes.

This is the longest and most heavily weighted section of the exam. It includes multiple-choice questions across:

• Biology (40%)
• Chemistry (40%)
• Physics (20%)

Rather than testing textbook knowledge, the questions focus on data interpretation, scientific reasoning, and applying concepts to unfamiliar scenarios. You’ll work through graphs, tables, diagrams, and layered passages that require multi-step thinking.
